Sand Moor is located just a few miles north of Leeds, and as the name suggest, the course is laid out on sandy moorland. The club shares the same parcel of land as Moortown and is just a stone’s throw away from Alwoodley GC – the three courses all laid out by the great Yorkshire-born Dr. Alister Mackenzie, designer of Augusta National. The club’s recent investment has seen both tree removal and restoration of the original Mackenzie-features, as well as a newly refurbished clubhouse.

Played on sand-based moorland terrain, the course presents great conditions year-round. While it might be lesser known than its famous neighbours, it’s regarded by those in the know as a brilliant course. Listed in Frank Pennink’s ‘Choice of Golf Courses’, he wrote of Sand Moor: ‘One of the most beautiful inland courses in the north of England, with wonderful moorland turf laid on a subsoil of sand and sandstone.’
